I began working in the Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine in the fall of 2015. I had previously worked for the Southwestern Ontario Medical Education Network (SWOMEN) in the capacity as Program Coordinator for 12 years. There I worked with all main departments at Schulich to facilitate resident training in the communities in Southwestern Ontario. I worked also with the regional faculty on professional development and achieved in-depth knowledge of the region.

In my position with the Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine I work with the PGE side of business coordinating the Pain Medicine residency program. Pain Medicine is a new two year subspecialty in Canada and our program was the first in our nation to launch in 2014. In the summer of 2016 we had our first two graduates and they were also the first residents to graduate in the discipline of Pain Medicine. Pain Medicine is an interprofessional specialty and I enjoy working with a program that is new and on the fore-front of fulfilling patient needs.

My position also administers all undergraduate activities in our department ranging from observerships, core rotations, electives and visiting electives. Undergraduate rotations are two weeks in duration so it is a frequently changing environment. We accommodate students at all three London hospitals so good coordination is essential to a thriving program.

One of my favourite things about my job is meeting students, residents and visitors and welcoming them to our Department and then follow their progress as they develop professionally and grow within their respective programs. I have the pleasure of spending two years with our residents and to be debriefing every student hearing about their experiences with our department. The feedback from our learners is a huge contribution to helping make the programs the best they can be. I find it tremendously invigorating to know that I play a part in the big picture of medical education and healthcare delivery in Canada.

My idea of a perfect summer day is to spend it in the back yard gardening and including a stint on the bicycle to the beach or a good and long trail ride with my tall, four-legged friend Tomson. In the winter the perfect day includes a snowmobile ride on the trails followed by a hot meal or a hot beverage made and served by someone else than me.

Quick Facts:
  • The Pain Medicine residency program has 4 concurrent residents.
  • We are in cohort 7 regarding the transition to CBD (starting in 2020)
  • I am responsible for all visitors coming to our department to observe with our consultants which typically is about 50 visitor per year
  • On average in the undergraduate program I welcome 135 clerks for their core Anesthesia rotation, 20 Schulich students who return for a 4th year elective plus about 50 visiting national and international elective students
  • In my program we use VENTIS for scheduling ORs city wide.
  • I would consider my strengths to be my organizational skills, my intent to always find win-win solutions to problems and the attitude and aptitude to continually seek continuous improvement.
